RUGBY & DISTRICT ART SOCIETY PROGRAMME 2008 – 2009 All @ Dunchurch Village Hall CV22 6PN 1st Wednesday of each month 7.30pm – 9.30pm
September 3 R&DAS Annual General Meeting Review of our 72nd year & a short presentation of 19th and early 20th century Mechanical Pencils by Allan Scott of Solihull.
October 8 (2nd Wednesday this month) Alan Tyers: Gouache Landscapes Award-winning local painter Alan will demonstrate his colourful and lively approach to this most underestimated of mediums, showing how an ordinary scene can be transformed into something exciting and beautiful through careful selection.
November 5 Philip Koomen: A Craftsman’s Progress Philip is a Baha’i whose sustainable approach to furniture design underpins his amazingly organic creations in wood. Internationally renowned, his recent commissions include furniture for the 2008 Hay Literary Festival.
December 3 Melvyn Petterson: The Instant Printmaker As a full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, artist and author Melvyn will describe how he captures nature’s fleeting nuances in his rich and subtle traditionally handcrafted etching and drypoint prints.
January 7 Kay Elliott: Flowers and Fabrics Self-taught Kay paints huge colourful watercolours of the garden flowers she loves, and they are such a dramatic tour-de-force that she is now in great demand as a furnishing fabric designer. Find out why!
February 4 Members’ Critique Evening: Theme (if any!) to be announced. Members discuss their work with the guidance of our resident experts.
March 4 Waldo Nunwick: Pen Lines Fantastically detailed architectural studies comprise the core of this young artist’s work. Texture, colour, form, perspective and emotion all combine in his glorious black and white pen drawings with a different point of view!
April 1 Paul Cox: Illustration in Brush and Colour Paul is a well-known illustrator of national repute, with several Folio Books classics to his credit. He will show how he creates his gently humorous and marvellously fluid brush and colour wash depictions to accompany such authors as P.G.Wodehouse and Jerome K. Jerome.
May 6 Eric Bottomley: 20th century Scenes Eric has produced a whole range of beautifully detailed oil paintings of town and country everyday life, which have been widely published. He specialises in 19th and 20th century scenes, particularly those featuring period trains, cars and buses in their natural habitats.
June 3 Sue Lewis-Blake: Land, Sea and Sky Sue is an Art teacher who works and experiments in many different mediums; for us she will demonstrate her use of unorthodox techniques to convey atmosphere and space in her sweeping watercolour/mixed media landscapes and seascapes.
July 1 Members’ Forum: Details to be announced Again by popular demand, another practical discussion evening by and for members.
August 5 Charles W. Smith: Lettercarving and Design Charles is a lettercutter and carver in stone from Yorkshire who also specialises in calligraphy and design. You may recall his work for the stained glass artist Helen Whittaker in last year’s programme. We hope that a small practical demonstration may be possible.
September 2 R&DAS Annual General Meeting for our 73rd year Plus (hopefully) The Return of the Brushmaker: Pro Arte again making brushes before our very eyes (to be confirmed).
